Custom Garrus by Punslinger Custom Garrus by Punslinger
The Garrus fig I bought to complete my Mass Effect trilogy preferred party was... it was just awful. It was *green* for Space Jesus' sake. And had no eyes, just dead black splotches. And the armor was the most half-assed thing I have ever seen. It was the worst thing I have ever spent $20 on. So I fixed it.

Close up of the scars because I'm fairly proud of how they came out. Considering they were a mauve blob on the green of his face beforehand... *shudder*

Update: Open for commissions if you want something similar done. See my front page.

You gave Zombie-Garrus a decent colour :D I'm going to paint my own Garrus, too, and I can only hope he'll look half as good as yours ;) Good job!

Thanks! He's not too difficult, thankfully. Good luck, all the same!

Not particularly, unfortunately. He's quite good at holding the Widow rifle, his head moves side to side a bit, his hips, knees, and elbows bend. The shoulders are well-articulated. But his torso is too bulky to permit a lot of range of motion in the arms.

The best thing I can say about the $20 Garrus fig is that the sculpt is good, which is more than I can say for the three-times-as-expensive Play Arts Garrus, who looks as if he was basted in oatmeal.

Garrus at least isn't that difficult to fix- a couple hours with paints and his face is as it should be. The color of the armor is off as well, but not nearly as much. I can't say I recommend the BigFish Garrus as-is, but it's at least fixable. Have a look at one in person before you make up your mind, and if you're not sure about your ability to make him look right, I'm available for commissions. :)

Agreed, the Garrus figure is awful, I want to fix mine as well. What paint did you use to get yours looking so good?

First off, thanks for the compliment. :)

Second, I just used standard miniature-painting acrylics. Citadel and Vallejo, mostly. I applied the color "fortress grey" as a glaze, built it up on the highest parts of his armor/face, and then went over it all with a thin brown wash/stain. Apart from that, I don't really know what to say. I have some experience painting wargaming miniatures and reasonably steady hands, that's how I managed to do the eyes.

Good luck fixing yours up! Garrus shouldn't be too difficult; just fix his color and give him his blue eyes and he'll look worlds better, even if you don't go way out of your way to do the scars justice. If you run into trouble or decide you don't feel like doing it yourself, though, I'm open for commissions to fix up figs. :)

I've finally got steady enough hands again and have painted some Warhammer miniatures before (but I'm not that good). I've had experience breaking toothpicks to get the point I want for eyes, so that should work, and I've been thinking about grabbing some of my brother's green stuff for the scars.

If I can't make it work in the end I know who to ask for custom work :) Thanks for the advice!

Great! Even a little experience painting miniatures should be more than enough for something as big as the Garrus fig. Best of luck to you!

Never gonna get over how much better this looks than the green abomination that came out of the box. It ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE GARRUS and not some long-dead hollow-eyed turian extra in Bettleguise.

Holy fuck, an action figure that looks like the character they're being marketed as? What a concept!

I'm still particularly impressed with the scars, the eyes, and the colony markings. You wouldn't think the colony markings would be hard to paint on, but making sure it didn't just obscure the scars was important, you did a good job peppering some blue in there while making it look like it had once been a consistent pattern that had been fucked up by a rocket to the face.

And the scars themselves are particularly amazing, they look like a fresh wound without being overwhelmingly gory (and you mostly paint for warhamms, so that in and of itself was an accomplishment).

nice! :squee: i wouldn't waste my money on the figure. ( and i love Garrus oh god what id give for a figure worth the moneys I pay. ) but what you've done is just pure awesome! and its what it should be for the cost of the figure. it sadness me that bio ware stay associated with the people who manufacture such inferior products. I applaud thee for you have worked much magic upon the mess and made pretty damn good ;)

Thanks! I'll probably take a photo of all three together at some point. They normally stand together watching over my gaming rig anyhow, just need to set up the lighting again. :)
